A stray cat adopted us last fall. She's beautiful with lots of fluffy orange and white hair. At least she was beautiful until she recently started losing her hair on her neck. She now has a band of flesh showing all around her neck. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be causing this?

Cats can suffer from certain vitamin deficiencies that could lead to hair loss. You mentioned the cat is a stray. Have you taken it to the vet to check on his health initially? Does he wear a collar or suffer from fleas? There are many variables here. The only way to tell for sure is to seek out a veterinarian in your area.

It could be fleas. It could be dry skin. It could be nerves. You should take her to your vet.

Could be some kind of stress that she's undergoing(kids picking on her, other pets) or a skin affliction. See a vet. Losing fur is always serious even if it can be fixed with a topical vet prescribed ointment.

I have five cats, and they do all sorts of wierd stuff. But I think the reason your cat is losing hair on her neck may be because she has some sort of rash or continuous itch on her neck and so she scratches it. You should take her to the vet.

I have two cats that both have very healthy skin, but I have had some skin problems with my dog. His skin looked red, irritated, and flaky. He also had bowel troubles and had a bad ear infection. It turns out that he had some food allergies that were not detected by our vet. We contacted a holistic vet and she ran some test that concluded he was allergic to beef, the main ingredient in most dog foods. We have switched him to a diet of organic dry dog food, containing mostly chicken, and top it off with some raw chicken necks. It has cleared up his dry skin, but I am no vet, so contact yours.

Seriously, there are too many possible reasons for this fur loss for anyone on this site to be of much help to you. This is something which must be seen and evaluated by a trained professional veterinarian. It could be fairly minor, but it also could be a symptom of a very serious condition.
Please be good to her and take her to the vet. She's worth it! Good luck.
