White male cats with health problems?

I know this may sound like a really bizarre question but I had a handsome all white, long hair male cat who was the love of my life. He had a heart murmur which we discovered when he was very young. The vets thought it would kill him quickly however when we went to a specialist it appeared to have completely disappeared. About 8 years later he became very ill. The vets had no diagnosis but he could not breath and was slowly asphyxiating so we put him down.

After that I heard from a few different people that white male cats were often just fragile and their health often deteriorated suddenly. It doesn't seem like color or sex would have anything to do with it but it keeps showing up? If anyone has any idea if there is a bit of truth in this I would be interested.

I have never heard of this phenomenon. I've have had lots of white cats (even one that is deaf) and never had a problem with a deteriorating health. I've even tried looking on the web for your question and have found nothing except for the deafness with blue eyes. It is possible that your cat had a disease that maybe the vets do not know of. It happens in humans all the time.

Our white cats (most were deaf) never had these problems. My white male that COULD hear had great health. He was hit by a car though. I miss you, Griffie. =(

White male cats with health problems?

Yes...I know that white cats with blue eyes can be deaf. Not all of them,..but many of them. Certain genes that cause color can be linked to other things such as hearing, sight (blindness), etc. Read more here:

Besides blindness and deafness, I have really not heard of other health related problems due to color.

i just want to say i really feel for you with this, i had to put my cat of 15 years (he was 17 and all black) down due to old age and i miss his so badly. it really hurts and i hope you feel better i understand what you say about love of your life, i feel exactly the same way about my cat.

sometimes theres just nothing we can do to prevent death and health problems, some cats die young some old same as people, but they all leave their mark and imprint on our life and thats what made the difference.

i wouldnt think his colour made a difference either, people sometimes say the same about black cats but it wasnt true for ours

his life was his own and it was his time, i know, believe me, its no consolation to the loss, but it seems so true sometimes

he could simply have reached his version of old age, as breathing problems is a symptom of that and of course as someone says above, there could have been something that was wrong no-one knew about and couldnt possibly pick up on
